See SCB-Ep-Ni in Action: Enabling Energy Autonomous IoT

Epishine, a pioneer in printed organic solar cells, and Nichicon, a global leader in energy storage manufacturing, are showcasing the SCB-Ep-Ni, a self-charging power module that’s redefining how IoT devices are powered, at Hardware Pioneers. By combining Epishine’s indoor solar cells with Nichicon’s compact energy storage, the SCB-Ep-Ni eliminates the need for disposable batteries—offering a maintenance-free, light power solution for low-power electronics.

The SCB-Ep-Ni, which includes an indoor solar cell, energy storage, and power management, is a plug-and-play, solder-free solution, making it easier than ever for developers to switch to light power—shortening both development time and time to market. With devices powered by light, recharging, maintaining or changing batteries becomes a thing of the past.

“The integration is designed to be seamless,” says Hassan Abdalla, Chief Product Officer at Epishine. “You don’t need to worry about soldering or custom tuning—just connect and go.”

No More Battery Changes—Even in Low Light

The SCB-Ep-Ni captures indoor light efficiently—even when it’s dim or inconsistent—and stores that energy for when it's needed. With a 4mAh LTO battery from Nichicon, devices can continue operating through extended periods of complete darkness.

Thanks to Epishine’s ability to capture indoor light efficiently, even in light conditions as low as 50 lux, the Nichicon battery is always charging. And when light isn’t available, the system draws from stored energy to keep devices running.

This makes it especially well-suited for IoT applications that need to be reliable and maintenance-free over long periods of time.

Enabling Smarter Energy Use

Beyond eliminating the need for battery replacements, the SCB-Ep-Ni enables smarter, more energy-aware behavior. Devices can adapt their activity to the available light, using energy intelligently to perform more actions or send data more frequently when light is abundant. Thanks to the 4mAh Nichicon battery that stores excess energy, devices remain operational even in complete darkness.

“Having a battery that constantly charges itself through light means increased functionality for your IoT device,” says Abdalla. “It adapts to its environment and keeps going—no maintenance required.”
